The shemagh, also known as the keffiyeh or Arab scarf, is a simple yet efficient way to protect your face and neck from sun, wind and sand. It also works well as alternative winter headwear, particularly in areas with snow and strong winds. Although most are cotton, warmer, faster-drying cotton-wool blends are also available. Styles of wearing the shemagh vary, but wrapping the scarf around the head and face provides optimal protection from the elements. Instructions for Wearing a Shemagh >>> Step 1) Fold the shemagh into a triangle. Wrap it around the back and over the top of your head, with the folded edge across your forehead, making sure that about two-thirds of the material is on your left. The right end ought to be long enough to come to your chest. Step 2) Use your left hand to pinch the shemagh about 3 or 4 inches from the folded edge and let the edge hang forward. Step 3) Let go of the right end. Using your left hand, hold the edge of the shemagh next to your left cheek and hold it near your left cheekbone. After you do this, use your right hand to pull the left end of the shemagh across your face, over your nose. Step 4) Continue to wrap the shemagh around your face and head until you get it back over your left shoulder. Grip the right tail and hold it to keep from pulling the shemagh off your head as you wrap. Work your hands down toward the ends as you wrap. Step 5) Pull the shemagh as tight as needed to feel comfortable. At the end of the process, take both ends and, somewhere near your right temple, tie them in a knot. I ordered the brown & camel & the red & white as these were the only 2 with no black. Under the images it says 100% cotton & in the narrative that although most are cotton, warmer, faster-drying cotton-wool blends are also available. I opinion that meant I'd whether get cotton or a cotton/wool blend. There is no way to pick or know what color is made of what material. There is no label on whether shemagh.
On 1st opportunity I was pleasantly surprised that the brown & camel looked better than I expected, quite sophisticated & subtle, a puny stiff but surely quite nice.
The red & white Shemagh is very different material, more flowing & pliable & shiny & cherry. I opinion it might be viscose or rayon & to check I burned one of the loose threads. It burnt with a ball of hard stuff unlike cotton or natural material that turns to ash. So I tried the same burn test on the brown & camel & it melted & dripped onto the covering below to which it stuck in a hardened drip, so that one isn't natural either.
It maybe that I was just unlucky to pick the only 2 colors that aren't cotton but if you surely want only cotton I'd say it's a bit risky.
I contacted the seller who said they were sorry I wasn't satisfied with the products & advised I return them to Amazon which I did saying they didn't match the narrative so I should get a reimbursement & not have to pay return shipping. Both these colors measured 38" x 38" which was Ok but a tad small if you want to wrap the face & head but it's adequate. There are styles of wrapping that are more like a hat & these should be just fine.
If you don't mind artificial material you may like these shemaghs. They are quite well made, look good & would dry quickly, I just prefer natural fibers.
